A Cosmo Connection

by Andrea Shields

This past October, I received a letter from a man who had been a Cosmo Club member in the '50s. His letter indicates the impact the Club had on its members. This former Cosmo member is Jean-Baptiste Renondin, now of Blois, France. After reading an article about the Club in the July/August issue of Illinois Alumni, published by the University of Illinois Alumni Association, Mr. Renondin was moved to seek out former friends from his Cosmo days. He states:
I joined it [i.e., the Cosmo Club] during the years '52-'53 .... I was a non-resident member of the club (living in Urbana) but very active in the social life of the club.

I happened to be a close friend of two resident (American citizens), Bruce E. Palmer (he was Junior) and Don Novak (Junior as well, I believe).

At that time, as you know, we were living in East Daniel, close to a sorority house. The president of the club at this time was an Australian fellow (Allan?) and among resident members were an Iraqi, an Afghan, two or three American students. Among nonresidents were a Greek friend (Samy?), a Swiss fellow, and many others. We had each Friday afternoon by 5:00 p.m., a seminar mainly about foreign affairs and those hours were very exciting. At that time, many black people would join us for the seminar and it was something different in the campus.

Along with his letter, Mr. Renondin enclosed a picture of himself (at the left in the photo) with some of his former Cosmo friends. He would also like to renew his friendship with Bruce Palmer and Don Novak. If anyone knows the whereabouts of these former Club members, please let me know, and I'll pass along this information to Mr. Renondin.
